Dear Church... Part 2: The Church in Ephesus - First Love

David Uth - August 17, 2008

Revelation 2:1-7

What happens when we loose our first love?

We might be doing well on the outside but the inside is without passion. In your relationships, are you going through the motions or do you pour your heart into it, hang on every word, learn something new about the other person everyday?

Ephesus had 3-4 trade routes and was known for a temple which was full of sexual sin opportunities. John was writing to the church there about his disappointment in them and giving them encouragement.

The Issue:

They had left their first love
They had a good thing going on:
1. Their "Work" - exhausting work
2. Their "Perseverance" - meaning stay under a burden
3. Their "Doctrine" - the truth, they knew the false apostles
Towards to end of times it will be difficult to determine the truth.

Abandoned their First Love
Dying on the inside by being too busy working
Substituted work for love
Knew how to defend Jesus but forgot how to love
The love for Jesus is still there but it has been covered up

This is a First Love for Jesus
Do you love Jesus? He knows our work but he wants our love. It is easy to be active but emotionally dead.
"Most active chicken in the yard is the one that just lost his head!"

This love is for others
Love for one another. Love people like Jesus loves them.

Do you have love?
If you don't have love you don't have anything.
1. Remember - the way it use to be, Jesus died for us, how He came in your life, what He has done for us
2. Repent - turn and go the other way. Turn away from what has taken Jesus place.
3. Renew - do things you once did

The consequence...
Eat at the tree of life in heaven and receive blessings from God - OR - the lights go out, we become an organization not a church, and there will be no sense of God or spirit.

Remember Him
