"One Flesh"
Genesis 2:18-24
There are over 13,500 marriages everyday in the U.S.
JOKE - You should marry an archaeologist - the marriage would get better with age!
Marriage is the 2nd biggest commitment you will make in your life. The first being to Jesus. Marriage is a mystery. The relationship of marriage is the example of your relationship with God. The purpose of marriage is not to make you happy. You will never be happy as a result of marriage. The purpose of marriage is to make you more Godly. Jesus is the only one who can complete you.
Genesis 2:18 - "fit for him" God knows what you need. Your spouse will be a compliment to you to help make you more like God. God made something special for man --woman! Men are suppose to leave their parents, cleave to their wife, and become one flesh.
Leave
It isn't used to mean forsake or to vacate a location. It is about Legacy and Loyalty. It is a time in your life when you step away from your parents. You begin to build your own life based on the legacy you saw from your parents. Moms and Dads are the primary educators of life. A parents goal is to prepare you for life and to teach you the value and responsibility of freedom.
Freedom...
Elections are meant for you to vote for the next generation. Elections tend to set the course for the future. Values are not for sale and you can not vote yourself into prosperity. If you vote for a candidate because of their race--you are a racist. If you vote for someone because of their sex--you are a sexist. If you vote for someone because you think they will bring you wealth--you are greedy! We are so blessed by God. You must vote for the person who you think best represents God's truth.
You are no longer loyal to your parents. Your loyalty shifts to your spouse. Let nothing come between you and your spouse--not work, not hobbies, not friends, not parents. No love is as important as the love for your spouse.
Hold Fast/Cleave
Term is used similarly to describing how your skin wraps around your bones. Marriage isn't just about a commitment. It is a covenant.
- Contract: is about distrust, limited responsibility, and can be voided.
- Covenant: is about trust, unlimited responsibility, and is forever.
1. It is a binding commitment, to cut a covenant is a frequently used term referencing a seal with blood.
2. Unconditional - marriage isn't 50/50, it won't work half-way, it has to be all the way
3. Witnessed by God - it is a commitment to God to live out the promise to the spouse
Psalm 127
It takes 3 to make a marriage work: Man - Woman - God
