Markers to Honor

June 22, 2008 - Danny de Armas

Judges 2:6-11

We put markers in our lives: street signs, pictures, statues, etc. to remind us where we come from. Joshua's tombstone was shaped like the sun to commemorate when God stopped the sun when Joshua prayed to him.

It makes you wonder how long it was until people forgot what the marker stood for? We have markers at our church. Does anyone know what the big rock or statue outside Welcome Center A commemorate?

In the scripture there are 2 broad meanings:

1. God wants to walk with us
Joshua went to the promise land and then returned to report back that the group should crossover--do it with faith. God wants to be a part of your daily routine. This happened at our church. The task was to raise $2.6 million to buy 156 acres in 1981 which would be $18 in today's money. The money was to buy the land and move the church in faith of what God would do.

The statue outside of Welcome Center A represents the faith of Joshua and Caleb to cross over to the promised land. It was a gift from an anonymous donor and it honors some key members who were faithful examples to everyone: Andy Yaros, Margery Price, and Kath Enfinger. It was also to honor what the church had done by raising all the money needed in 70 days. The statue serves as a reminder to future generations how great God is and how he blesses those who trust in Him.

Why is it important to remember?
To honor the lives of people who lived their life for God. They were the examples.

2. God wants to work with us

God wants to work with you while he walks with you. What is the work that God is calling you to do? It is not to commemorate what the person did for God but what great things God did for us.

At our church there is a huge rock near the L.B. McCloud exit. It is to commemorate the fund raising campaign, "upon this rock." It memorializes what God is doing for us. God works with simple, regular people. Trevor Hawk told Brother Jim to go for the whole goal not the little ones. He said God can raise the money for all of it.

Do you want to work with God? What is your assignment? Touch the rock or the statue and remember that God is good and has been good to us.
