Psalm 139:19-24
Sin upsets us because it takes us away from the purpose we were created to fulfill.
Sin steals the joy of being His--His work.
I. Hating the sin around us
There are six references to people in versus 19 - 22:
1. the wicked
2. men of blood
3. your enemies
4. those who hate you
5. those who rise up against you
6. my enemies
Everyday in America someone says there is no God.
We live in days just like the days in Psalms. The references in this scripture are not about a specific person. They are not about taking revenge. David is just opposing wickedness.
A life without God is meaningless. It is personal because it is against our purpose.
Is anyone disturbed by the strong language used in this passage?
1. Psalm is like David's diary or journal.
2. Read scripture in light of scripture - we are suppose to love our enemies.
3. Leave judgment in the hands of God - leave them in His hands.
In verse 22 - David looks at himself. He saw the world in himself and wanted God to clean him up first. When asked what was wrong with the world, G.K. Chesterton said, "I Am." Start with the sin in you and hate it. We point fingers at the world. Jesus most stinging words were to the religious people - the Pharisees. We have no right to talk about the sin around us until we get ride of the hypocrisy in the church.
II. Hating the sin in us
Matthew 7:1-5
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.
1 Peter 4:17
For it is time for judgment to begin at the household of God; and if it begins with us, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
David is standing in front of God saying to him, 'surely you can create something clean inside me.' He is asking God to search through his life and if there is something bad or against God remove it and lead me down the right path - the everlasting way!
We need the light in us to light up the darkness. God judges us like we judge others. Love your enemies but let God make you clean first.
